Mediaeval Collections

The onset of the Middle Ages is evoked with finery and toiletries, with weapons and ceramics retrieved from Merovingian tombs. Also dating from this period, the Guttrolf is a very rare, enigmatic glass container. An ivory binding cover together with the exceptional collection of carved plates from the chancel of the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, amongst others, illustrate Metz's stunning artistic tradition, first as the capital of the Merovingian kingdom of Austrasia, and then the cradle of the Carolingian dynasty.

Around the impressive mediaeval Chèvremont granary, a former grain store in the town which today houses a beautiful collection of Lorraine sculptures dating from the 12th through to the 16th centuries, a series of spaces is devoted to religious and secular architecture. Three sets of painted wooden ceilings, major pieces in the collections, provide a framework presenting items from daily life, as well as decorative elements from living areas.
