Paul Verlaine (1844-1896)
This moving portrait was painted in a corridor of the Broussais Hospital in Paris in December 1891, while the poet was having his syphilis treatment. Verlaine will dedicate a sonnet to his friend Aman-Jean and will evoke this portrait in one of his Dedicacions: " You took me in a moment of familiar calm / Where the mask becomes childlike again (...) I remain assured , - in conformity with your excellent double ".
