The Prisoner
Inspired by the song Les Hirondelles from Béranger (1780-1857), this work received a prize at the Salon of 1844 in Paris and was presented by Lemud at the Universal Exhibition in Metz in 1861.
It gained renewed interest after 1870 when the Messins reinterpreted the romantic figure of the prisoner as an allegory of Lorraine annexed by Germany.
